Ancient History

In the beginning there was Charlie Foxtrot...  Well, it sounded OK for a minute there.  The first incarnation of Charlie Foxtrot began in mid-2002.  We started with a nucleus of myself (Jan Depner), Henry Harrington, Jerry O'Rourke, and Alan Auter.  We then added a frontman/lead singer.  We played about three gigs before we started having personnel problems and put the project on hold.  Fast forward to New Years Eve 2005 when, thanks to a slightly paranoid frontman, Henry got fired from his then current band and Jerry walked out in protest.  We got together shortly thereafter and put Charlie Foxtrot back together with a new drummer and no frontman.  All of this leads us to the question - why Charlie Foxtrot?  For those of you in the military or closely related to the military the answer is obvious.  Charlie Foxtrot is an acronym using the military or NATO phonetic alphabet.  The acronym CF is closely related to a couple of other military acronyms - SNAFU and FUBAR.  The reason we called this band Charlie Foxtrot was that, almost without exception, every band we had been in had started as, or become, a Charlie Foxtrot (see examples above) so we decided to name this one properly from the start.  If you haven't yet got the gist of the term Charlie Foxtrot I suggest that you Google for it ;-)

More Recent History

Since about February of 2006 we have been playing the Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast area just about every weekend.  With the exception of a change of drummers in January 2007 we haven't had any personnel problems (shakes chicken foot at screen, looks for gris-gris bag).   The most amazing thing of all is that we don't seem to have any egomaniacs in the band.  We may, at some point in the near future, look around for a front man but, if we do, he'll have to fit in with the rest of us nonconformists.  So far, my take on frontmen is in agreement with my favorite musical joke

Q. What's the difference between a moose and a big band?
A. On a moose the horns are in the front and the asshole is in the back.

Three of the original members sing (with varying degrees of success ;-)  Jerry being the most gifted and me being on the trailing edge.  Even so, we still do a lot of three part harmony.  Our last drummer, Dave Nuessly, left the band in October, 2007 and has been replaced with - Alan Auter.  Alan had been unavailable for a while since he was playing with New Orleans area musicians Jimmy Jules and Gary Miles.

Even More Recent History

In July of 2009 we made a major change to the band.  Henry Harrington has left us and gone back to his first love, country music.  To replace Henry (although he's a tough act to follow) we added an old friend of ours, Mr. Cory (Biscuit) Ray late of Biscuit and the Blues Bakers.   This could get real fun ;-)

So new it's hardly history

In late 2009 we replaced Alan Auter on drums with Cory's cousin Chad Ray.  Even though Chad lives in Prairieville he still manages to make it over here early for every gig (will miracles never cease).  Chad is a hell of a drummer and if he'll just stop trying to drag the rest of us into the 21st century we'll be OK.  In addition to bringing Chad in we've added an old friend of mine and Cory's from Biscuit and the Blues Bakers, Mr. Buddy Dubourg, on keys.  Buddy is also know as Mr. Excitement because he gets so worked up when he's playing.  Why, there are even times when you can actually see him move.
